Zone Set Up Instructions
The next time you start your computer, the ZoneAlarm firewall will start automatically.
Start it now by pressing Start, Programs, Zone Labs, then ZoneAlarm.
1.
- The main ZoneAlarm Control Window will come up. It looks like this:
2.
- ZoneAlarm will automatically detect the programs you are running that require access the Internet.
Tell ZoneAlarm what programs you want or DO NOT want to have Internet access by clicking
Yes or No.
- If you would like ZoneAlarm to always allow Internet access to a particular program, without
asking first, check the Remember box. You can always deny Internet access to a program in the
future by pressing the Programs button on the Control Window and changing the settings.
3.
- Press Programs on the Control Window and a drop down sectionappears.
- Under Allow connect you can choose whether ZoneAlarmwill allow, not allow or
question you before connecting a particular program to the Internet or other
computers on your network. You may change the settings by right clicking on the
appropriate dotnext to Local or Internet.
- When clicked, the far left dot will show a green check and always allow access.
- The middle dot will show a red X and will never allow
access. The far right dot will show a question mark setting
ZoneAlarm to ask you before allowing access each time the program
is started. (Generally, you will want programs like browsers,
email and FTP programs to always have access to the Internet as
they don't work any other way) Each time you make a change, information
on that change is displayedat the bottom of the drop down section.
- Clicking on the red arrow button at the bottom right of the drop down section closes it.
4.
- Next, set your computer's security settings by pressing the
Security button on the Control Window.
- If you have only one computer (your computer is not on a network)
set both Local and Internet to High.
- The only time you should reduce the Internet setting to Medium
or Low is during a time when you want to give someone
outside, Internet access to your computer. For instance, if you
have PC Anywhere, VNC or another remote control program and you
wish to allow a technician or colleage access to your computer
over the net.
- If you have multiple computers on a network, you may want to
set the Local setting to either Medium or Low.
- This will allow other computers on your network to have access to your programs or files,
while restricting unauthorized access via the Internet.
- NOTE: If an Internet Express technician is attempting to
diagnose a problem with your DSL service, you must reduce the
Internet security level to Low so the tech can perform
the necessary tests to evaluate your connection.
5.
- If an outside source attempts to access your computer, the dialog boxto your right will appear.
When in High security mode, ZoneAlarm will not
allow anyone to access your computer. It will show you the image to
your right. More info will tell you more about the attempted access.
OK will close the window so you can continue using the Internet.
- You can Log a list of any attempted accesses by clicking Alerts
on the Control Window and checking the Log alerts to
a text file box.
- Not all attempted access to your computer is malicious. For instance,
our equipment may ping you (send a test signal to see if
you are online).ZoneAlarm will block all inbound traffic to your
computer when security is set to High. The words in the pop up
was made to reach your computer, but failed.
- Zonealarm will continue to run automatically after it is installed.
It has a comprehensive help menu which can be accessed by hitting the F1
key or clicking Help on the Control Window. One of the programs more
interesting and valuable features is the large red panic button marked STOP.
If your security level is set less than High and you get a message that your
computer is being accessed, clicking on this button immediately suspends all
inbound and outbound Internet access to your computer.
